Otter.ai has named Mike Barnes its Head of Partnerships and Alliances, and the move signals a shift in how AI conversation-intelligence vendors plan to reach enterprise revenue teams: not through more direct sales, but through the reseller and systems-integrator channel that already carries CRM and sales-engagement software into large accounts.

Barnes joins Otter after two decades building partner and channel organizations across enterprise SaaS and marketing technology, most recently leading partnerships at customer-success platform Gainsight. At Otter, whose “conversational knowledge engine” is used by more than 35 million professionals to capture and structure meeting and call content, he will build a global partner program from the ground up across the US, UK and Europe, working with technology partners, resellers, managed service providers, systems integrators, distributors and affiliates.

Why it matters: conversation intelligence has largely grown on self-serve adoption and direct enterprise sales, the same playbook most AI productivity tools have used to scale. Otter’s program runs in two phases, starting with partner recruitment and lighthouse deployments before adding co-selling, co-marketing and training, the same sequencing revenue intelligence vendors use to get into accounts a direct sales team cannot reach on its own. It is a sign the category, which SalesTechEdition has tracked as it moves from recording sales calls into qualifying and guiding them, now needs the same distribution muscle as the CRM and sales-engagement platforms it increasingly competes with for budget.

The original insight worth flagging: Otter recruited its partnerships lead from a customer-success vendor, not from a sales tech company or systems integrator. That points to where Otter expects its next wave of partner-sourced deals to originate: retention and expansion teams already sitting on meeting data, not net-new sales pipeline.
