Composites One, the North American distributor of composite materials, announced on Nov. 2 a broader rollout of a redesigned digital platform that lets manufacturers order, check pricing and invoices, and pull technical documents on their own.

The distributor carries products from more than 600 suppliers and tens of thousands of items for manufacturers in aerospace, marine, wind energy and other markets. The new platform puts product availability, pricing, invoicing, account tools and technical documentation in one account view, so a customer who already knows the part can reorder or check an invoice without phoning a rep.

Composites One built the platform around a standing Customer Advisory Board and rounds of direct customer feedback. That feedback showed customers in different markets search for materials in different ways, so the team invested in search and filtering that adapts to the attributes each customer cares about instead of sorting by market. Christina Chatfield, Head of Digital Growth, said the project grew larger than first planned.

What it means for the sales leader

The company keeps its Technical Sales teams on material selection, process troubleshooting and new applications, and moves routine reorders and invoice checks to self-service. Dave Smith, Chief Commercial Officer, said, “These investments are about building capabilities where customers need us most.” The Customer Advisory Board will keep shaping updates based on how the platform is used in the field.

In our reading, a distributor that sends reorders to a portal frees its reps for the conversations where expertise decides the order, and it changes what those reps should be measured on. A sales leader planning the same split should decide up front how portal revenue is credited to accounts and territories, because a rep whose reorder volume moves online will otherwise see quota attainment fall for work the company asked them to stop doing.
