Amgen is moving its global commercial operations onto Veeva Vault CRM, extending a relationship with Veeva that spans more than a decade. The deal is a data point in a quieter argument than the one horizontal CRM vendors are having: that a CRM built for one regulated industry, with that industry’s data model baked in, has an easier path to trustworthy AI agents than a general-purpose platform retrofitting them.
What happened
Veeva Systems said Amgen plans to deploy Vault CRM globally as part of the Vault CRM Suite, which the company positions as the technology foundation for what it calls agentic commercial in life sciences. “Moving to Vault CRM will help accelerate our efforts to bring new therapies to patients globally with greater speed and agility,” said Scott Skellenger, Amgen’s senior vice president and chief information officer. Matt Farrell, Veeva’s president of commercial strategy, said Vault CRM “will provide the agentic commercial foundation to help Amgen deliver innovative medicines for some of the world’s toughest diseases to millions of patients.”
Why it matters
The suite includes an Agentic Call Report feature built specifically to generate commercial evidence and surface treatment barriers from field interactions, a workflow that only makes sense inside a CRM that already models healthcare-provider engagement rules. A RevOps leader in a regulated sector should read this the same way the market read Salesforce’s decision to keep Fin outside core Agentforce: as evidence that vertical depth, not agent count, is what a rollout of this size is actually betting on.
The original insight
Every major CRM vendor is now marketing an agentic layer, but Amgen’s decision is a bet on a narrower claim: that Veeva’s “deep understanding of life sciences,” in Farrell’s own words, does more for agent reliability than a broader platform’s scale. It is the same logic other vendors are chasing with a shared context layer, applied instead to owning the vertical data model outright rather than integrating into a horizontal one.
