Account-based marketing has continued its strategic shift from a marketing-led discipline toward a unified sales-and-marketing motion owned jointly by the CRO and CMO. The shift reflects the operational reality that ABM works only when the sales team is structured around the target account list, not when marketing campaigns are notionally aligned to accounts the sales team is actually working.

Platforms including Demandbase, 6sense, RollWorks, and Terminus have all positioned themselves as the unified ABM platform that bridges marketing and sales workflows. The competitive differentiation increasingly centers on the depth of CRM integration and the quality of intent data feeding the targeting workflows rather than on advertising delivery itself.

The operational impact at successful ABM adopters has been measurable. One CMO at a publicly traded software company said the team’s ABM program produced roughly four times the pipeline velocity of broader demand generation when measured at the target-account level, but cautioned that the result required eighteen months of sustained sales-marketing alignment before producing meaningful results. The same executive said the program’s success depended on the CRO and CMO co-owning the target-account list and reviewing it weekly.

The categorical pressure on standalone ABM platforms has come from CRM vendors building native account-based workflows. Salesforce’s Sales Cloud and HubSpot’s Marketing Hub both ship account-prioritization and account-engagement scoring features that compete directly with the basic ABM use case, particularly for mid-market customers.

For CROs evaluating ABM tooling, the practical question is whether the platform delivers actionable account intelligence to the sales team in their existing workflow, or whether it produces marketing-side dashboards that don’t bridge into seller behavior. The former drives pipeline acceleration; the latter generates a quarterly marketing report.
